HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION

How to Make The Most Out of Your Engagement Session: Tips from a Wedding Photographer

Norfolk, Virginia

Congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time in your life, and one of the best ways to capture this chapter in your lives is with an engagement photo session. As a Wedding and Lifestyle photographer based in Norfolk VA and traveling all around the east coast, I’ve had the honor of photographing many couples during this time, and it’s always such a fun time.

Hey, I’m Karlie! A Lifestyle and Wedding Photographer based in Norfolk, Virginia. I travel all around the East Coast for weddings, and would love to travel to you! Are you getting married in Virginia, Maryland, or any other surrounding states and in search of a photographer? You found the right place! Each of my wedding packages include a complimentary engagement session! Reach out to me here!

The key to a successful and enjoyable engagement session is preparation and having a GOOD MINDSET! Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your engagement session and make it a truly enjoyable experience!

1. Turn Your Session into a Date Night

Why not make your engagement session part of a special date night? Set aside some time before or after your session to do something enjoyable. Plan to go out for dinner or a fun activity together. This will not only give you something to look forward to but will also help you relax and enjoy the experience. When you think of the session as part of a romantic evening, it creates a more natural and loving atmosphere, which will shine through in your photos.

2. Dress Comfortably and Confidently

Your outfits can play a significant role in how you feel during the session. It’s important to choose clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, and stick to the more flowy clothing. When you book with me, you will receive a Styling & Location Guide full of outfit styling tips and example photos.

3. Clean Your Ring

Make sure your engagement ring is sparkling clean for your session as it we will likely capture many close-up photos of your hands. A quick visit to your jeweler for a professional cleaning can make a big difference, and often they offer it for free. You’ll be surprised at how much more your ring will shine and stand out in the photos.

4. Choose a Meaningful Location

Choose a location that holds special meaning for you as a couple. Whether it’s the place where you first met, your favorite beach, or a local park you love to visit, a meaningful location can add an extra layer of emotion and meaning to your photos. Plus, being in a familiar place will help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

5. Be Yourself and Have Fun

The best photos are the ones where you are genuinely enjoying yourselves. Don’t be afraid to be playful, laugh, and show affection. I guide my couples through the session, but also tell them to feel free to suggest poses or activities that feel natural to them. Remember, this session is about capturing your unique relationship, so let your personalities shine through.

6. Bring Personal Props

Incorporating personal props can add a unique touch to your photos and make them more personal. Think about items that are meaningful to your relationship, such as a picnic blanket, a musical instrument, or even your pet. Props can also help you feel more at ease and provide something to interact with during the session.

7. Communicate Your Vision

Good communication with your photographer is essential. Share your vision, preferences, and any concerns you might have. If there are specific poses or shots you want, let your photographer know or send them inspiration photos. Communicate this vision with your partner as well. While you may be gathering ideas on social media, remember that your partner may not be. Explain your expectations to avoid any misunderstandings and disagreements.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your engagement session is not only successful but also a joyful experience that you will cherish for years to come!
